OLIVER'S TWIST ON : "Thinking Differently"

I mentioned in a previous Tips how I had the benefit of receiving some amazing pearls of wisdom on human behavior from Jerry, my friend and sales manager, when I sold solar energy systems in Los Angeles.
Here's another one that could work for you in certain situations.
Swimming pool solar systems were in great demand those days, and I was busy with the swimming pool leads that came my way. One thing in common the owners of these pools had was kids... young, rambunctious, noisy, kids! A salespersons nightmare because they can be so distracting!
Night after night frustratingly I competed with the noise level. I was nearly shouting at times to be heard.
So I went to Jerry with a solution. "No more swimming pool leads." I said, "It's too frustrating competing against the noisy kids. My voice is getting hoarse and it's affecting my sales."
"Can you think of how else to solve this, rather than just give up?" he asked.
"You could pre-qualify the leads to make sure they didn't have kids," I suggested half jokingly.
"I could and I won't. How about we explore other solutions? For example, you've found raising your voice work doesn't work for you most of the time, right?"
"Right!" I replied.
"Do you know why it's not working?" He asked.
"I'm not sure. Why?"
"First because the parents don't hear the noise - they're used to it... And secondly, it's because you're competing with the kids. When you raise your voice, they raise their voices. It's a no win situation for everyone.
"But if I keep my voice level the same the parents can't hear me." I responded.
"That's the point!" Jerry said patiently. "And because they can't hear you, they'll most likely tell the kids to go somewhere else and play. In fact... do this... don't even keep your voice level the same... lower it, and see what happens!"
Brilliant! I couldn't wait for my next family lead. When it came, my first thoughts were, "Oh great! I hope they have a noisy family!"
They did! The kids were loud enough for me to test this piece of advice! This time, instead of dreading it, getting tense I welcomed it and lowered my voice when the noise level rose.
Next thing the parents were shouting to the kids, 'Guys, we can't hear ourselves think... please get out of here and play in the back yard... and shut the door behind you."
Result... no more frustration, more sales and lots more happy customers.
Amazing isn't it, how we can change our outcome by thinking differently?
