Overcoming the 6 Obstacles to Achievement
By Earnie Larsen

There are 6 main obstacles that people encounter in striving to achieve their goals. Learn these simple steps to overcome them.

As much as we may understand what goal setting and goal achievement takes, as much as we may be motivated, as much as we have the technology of how to do it, it is hero's work. It takes enormous courage to set goals, to take responsibility for the direction of your life, and then get serious about accomplishing those goals.

No matter how determined you are to achieve your goals, there are always going to be obstacles in your path. Recognizing what those obstacles are will take you a long way toward defeating them.

There are six main obstacles that people encounter in striving to achieve their goals once they have been set. Rate yourself on a score of 1 to 10 after each one of these. One meaning, "This is not a significant problem for me. I do not see this as an obstacle." Ten meaning, "Yes, this is a problem."

Learn to Overcome these 6 Obstacles to Achievement

  1. Fear
  2. Poor Self-esteem
  3. Negative Habits
  4. Lack of Skill
  5. Poor Discipline
  6. Poor Time Management

The number one obstacle to fulfillment is fear. For many of us, fear has become a habit. Like all habits, it is rooted in the subconscious level of our being and will fight to the death to preserve itself. We are often not even aware of the fear that tends to creep up and kill the dream.

Obstacle number two is poor self-esteem. Self-esteem simply is the value that we place upon ourselves. That is totally dependent upon the definition we have of ourselves, and no one can outperform their own self-image. If we are holding in our hand a lump of gold, but we define it as coal, we aren't going to have anywhere near the same esteem for that reality even though, in fact, it's gold. That's what low self-esteem is. It's not seeing the truth about ourselves.

What we live with, we learn. What we learn, we practice. What we practice, we become; and what we become has consequences. So low self-esteem, the belief system that says "I really can't," or "I should not," or "This is not possible for me" becomes an obstacle to achieving our goals.

Self-esteem is issue-specific. In some areas of your life you may have absolutely wonderful self-esteem. But if you have repeatedly failed to reach a goal in a specific area, whether it's sales, promotion, finances, or quality of life, take a serious look at how you define yourself in that particular area. No one can outperform their own self-image. Your self-image will create and dictate expectations, and you will either live up to or down to the definitions you have of yourself. How do you define yourself in the specific area in which you are very desirous of reaching a goal?

The third obstacle to goal achievement is negative habits. If you are experiencing failure in trying to reach a particular goal, chances are there is a negative habit at work somewhere.

Negative habits tend to fall into five primary categories. The first is negative self-talk. Most of us are aware that the self-talk within our own head translates into what we do in real life. If you have developed a habit of negative self-talk - "I can't do this," "It isn't going to work out," "I don't have a right to succeed," "This other person is always going to defeat me" - that is going to translate into failure. It becomes an obstacle between the dream and the reality.

The second negative habit is continually diluting your effort. Once you set a goal and start moving toward it, do you find that other projects always seem to get in the way? If that is repetitious, then it is habitual.

A third negative habit that very easily gets in the way of accomplishing goals is "majoring in minors." In other words, finding something that doesn't matter a hill of beans and making it so important that it becomes a major obstacle to going forward. Rather than going out and make the calls that you need to be making, you focus on the fact that somebody didn't smile at you when you came in the front door, or that your shoes are not shined.

A fourth negative habit is failure to be adequately prepared. Most of us have heard luck defined as "when preparedness meets opportunity." Success requires preparation. To repeatedly not do your homework, not know the percentages or the figures, or who is the important person to contact in the first place is a habit that will continually thwart your achievement.

The fifth most common negative habit is quitting too soon. I once saw a large picture of Thomas Edison with a quotation underneath that read, "How many times people have quit before they achieve success when success was right around the corner?" So often, people quit a moment too soon, an effort too soon, one more try too soon. Is that a repetitious habit in your life? Do you find that you often give up on a goal before really giving it your all? After negative habits, the fourth obstacle to goal achievement is lack of skills. When we talk about skills, we aren't talking about people being good or bad, dysfunctional or functional. Skills can be learned. If you have identified a skill that you are missing and need to gain in order to achieve your goals, then your obvious task is to develop that skill.

For example, if one of your goals requires that you become an excellent speaker, that presentation is important, there are many organizations that can teach you that skill. How to think clearly, express yourself clearly, and verbalize in a forceful way. Is there a skill you need in order to reach your goals? If so, how can you go about developing it?

Obstacle number five is poor discipline. The achievement of any kind of goal, the achievement of the transformed self, is a matter of execution, and execution is a matter of consistent action. Poor discipline simply means inconsistent action. You make a good start, but then you do not keep at it long enough to make that skill or habit a part of who you are.

The final obstacle to goal achievement is poor time management. We all only have so much time. The question is, how do you use your time? One of the great tools of failure is to diffuse your time, to go too many ways at one time. Time management requires that you have a focus for your energy, and hopefully, that focus is within balance so that you are becoming a well-rounded person.

In order to effectively use your time, you must establish goals, create specific measurable plans to meet those goals, and build into your growth program some accountability in order to maintain consistency. Then you take action-and keep on taking action until the belief that you can achieve your goal becomes so ordinary that it becomes habit.

There is little in life that is more wonderful than knowing where we want to go and being on the way to getting there. That is the gift you will give yourself when you set clear goals and commit to achieving them.
