Victim and Responsible: Give Yourself a Choice
By Brian Klemmer
Let's continue our discussion of two viewpoints for looking at life: victim and responsible. Victim is the viewpoint that something is being done to me. Responsible is the viewpoint that I am the cause for my experience. My experience is the result of choices I have made.
The key element that distinguishes these two viewpoints is choice. The victim doesn't see that they have choices. This is revealed in the use of three common victim statements: 1) I can't, 2) I have to, and 3) They won't.
Using each of the above statements, make a list of how you look at life from
the perspective of a victim. Here are some examples to get you started:
I can't raise my income, because...
I can't be competitive, because...
I can't have what I want, because...
I can't get my customer (vendor, boss, subordinate) to listen to me, because...
I have to say yes, because...
I have to agree to these goals, because...
I have to work here, because...
I have to do it this way, because...
I have to run this kind of schedule, because...
They won't allow me to...
They won't let me do it the way I want...
They won't listen to me...
They won't work harder...
They won't ever change...
After you make your own true list, simply change all the statements to "I choose to.. ." At first you might resist this exercise, but do it anyway! Do you notice that rewording your statements to "I choose to..." feels different? That's because victim statements are draining. They consume energy and bring with them resentment, powerlessness and frustration. When you make choices, however, you create options and feel empowered.
In our summer teenage leadership "live in" seminars, the theme for the class is: "Every moment is a choice, and every choice has benefits and prices." At the beginning of camp, one of the students inevitably brings up something he or she views as an exception to having choices by saying that school is mandatory. Our facilitator responds by saying, "No, that is a choice." The student usually argues by saying, "No, I have to go to school." Our facilitator then maintains, "No, you are choosing to go to school." This verbal volley continues until the student eventually says something such as, "Look. If I don't go to school, they'll drag me to juvenile hall." At this point, our facilitator says, "That's correct! That's called a price! You are choosing to go to school and pay one price, instead of another."
When we're honest with ourselves and admit that we make choices because of consequences, our experience changes. We begin to see how we can live from a responsible -- rather than a victim - point-of-view.
